How it works

The active ingredient in every Gengigel product is high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, similar to the kind the body makes itself.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that binds a lot of water. It is part of the body's connective tissue and is present in the gums and the lining of the mouth, where it keeps tissue moist and supple.

It also plays a part when tissue heals. When an ulcer forms or the gums become inflamed, hyaluronic acid is involved in the first steps of repair.

Gengigel is applied directly to the area as a gel, spray or rinse. It clings to the lining of the mouth and forms a film over the area.

Hyaluronic acid binds water in the tissue, which helps reduce swelling and calm inflammation. It also supports the connective tissue cells that rebuild the tissue.

A film that adheres, protects and keeps bacteria out

Teeth and gums covered by a protective film

Gengigel forms a film on the gums and the lining of the mouth. It has three properties.

Adhesive

The hyaluronic acid stays in place for extended periods.

Barrier

The film resists saliva and creates a protected environment for the tissue.

Bacteriostatic

The film prevents bacteria and viruses from penetrating the tissue.

Where does it come from?

The hyaluronic acid in Gengigel is made by biotechnology, through microbial fermentation, and is not extracted from animal tissue. The manufacturer is Ricerfarma in Italy, which specialises in hyaluronic acid for the mouth.

The Perio line also contains chlorhexidine, which reduces plaque.

Patented technology

Hyaluronic acid does most good if it stays where it is put. Three developments from Ricerfarma address that.

Clings for longer

The hyaluronic acid is combined with choline alfoscerate, which increases how well it adheres to the lining of the mouth, so the film lasts longer.

Breaks down more slowly

Ascorbyl palmitate, a vitamin C derivative, protects the hyaluronic acid from the enzymes that break it down. It is used in the Gum Protection toothpaste, among others.

Less chlorhexidine staining

The Perio products contain Anti-Colour Complex (ACC): lipoic acid, ascorbyl palmitate and EDTA, which reduce the tooth staining that chlorhexidine causes.

Good to know

According to the manufacturer, for the products that contain hyaluronic acid only:

  • No known contraindications
  • No known drug interactions
  • Can be used in pregnancy
  • For children and older people
  • SLS free
  • Gluten free
  • Triclosan free
  • Paraben free

One rule applies to every product: do not eat or drink for 30 minutes after use, so the product can stay on the area.
